Intelligent machines have replaced human capabilities in many areas. Artificial intelligence is the intelligence exhibited by machines or software. A new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered platform is set to supplement school education with live and inclusive learning opportunities for students, not only in the UAE but even across the world. Launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, Online Learning World (OLW) comes after extensive market research in the country revealed that the percentage of students taking private classes rose through the grades – and in Grade 12, around 37 per cent of all Emirati and 35 per cent of all non-Emirati students sought online learning. OLW aims to break down complicated chapters into simple and interesting lesson plans which clarify and enhance concept-based learning as per a specific board's curriculum. Subjects like Maths, English, Science, Coding, Arabic, Hindi and French, will be taught in a fun and interactive way with masterclasses for well being, including fitness, culinary, life skills and other short certificate courses also being high on the agenda. "This is a phenomenal platform that empowers the students seeking support to learn complex subjects in a simple and efficient manner. This is also revolutionary because it is on-demand – thereby empowering students and parents to select specific and tailored tutoring and plan their learning days," said Amreesh Chandra, president of OLW.

According to research from Carnegie Mellon University kids solve math problems by going through four distinct stages: encoding (reading and understanding the problem); planning (working out how to tackle it); solving (crunching the numbers) and responding (typing in the correct answer). This follows the general path that is set out in school, but is not something missing? "We're not teaching them how to learn." Reflection and putting subjects in perspectives and in a general framework are all too often given too little space in school education. While at the same time this is the basic trigger for the ongoing extraordinary development of artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a technology of the future – it is well and truly here. In many ways, it is already shaping human interactions by getting out of research labs and entering the real world. And it is changing the world as we know it. It could not be more apparent that AI can change the world for the better – from creating new healthcare solutions to designing hospitals of the future, improving farming and food supply, helping refugees acclimatise to new environments, enhancing educational resources and access, and even cleaning our oceans, air and water supply.

Artificial Intelligence is poised to disrupt many industries, but education arena has not typically been at the forefront of such conversations. If it has been included at all, the narrative has been in a more abstract manner than actual application. And even though several companies such as Carnegie Learning and Content Technologies, Inc have taken either more adult learning approaches or those that are deeply rooted in tech, the space is still anyone's game with new trends to be developed for Gen Z. The industry is an important one not only for its ability to generate an entirely new level of learning but also because of the very real business opportunity in the space. Interest in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in schools is growing. More educators are participating in important conversations about it as understanding develops around how AI will impact the work of teachers and schools.
